About the role#
The New Britain Museum of American Art is hiring a Luce Curatorial Fellow to support the Puerto Rico in Focus initiative. This project explores the historical intersections of Puerto Rican and American art. You will work with two exhibition co-curators to manage research, catalogue development, loan coordination, and public programming. This is a full-time, on-site, paid role based in New Britain, Connecticut. You will report to the Director of Collections and Exhibitions.
What you'll do#
- Conduct scholarly research on artists, collections, and themes. You will maintain artist dossiers, bibliographies, and research files.
- Assist with the exhibition checklist and manage loan requests, including communications with lending institutions and the Registration Department.
- Support the exhibition catalogue by tracking deadlines, coordinating author requests, and preparing object entries.
- Coordinate project logistics, including meeting agendas, internal communications, and project timelines.
- Help plan a scholarly advisory convening, which involves managing travel, honoraria, and briefing materials.
- Work with the Learning and Engagement Department to create educational materials and digital guide content.
- Assist with administrative tasks like tracking expenditures, processing invoices, and preparing grant reports.
- Research potential acquisitions that align with the goals of the Puerto Rico in Focus initiative.
What you'll need#
- A Master's degree in Art History, Museum Studies, or a related field. Ph.D. candidates are encouraged to apply.
- Professional experience in a museum or gallery setting.
- Fluency in Spanish, including writing, reading, and speaking.
- Knowledge of Puerto Rican, Caribbean, Latin American, or American art, particularly from the 18th to the 20th centuries.
- Strong research skills with experience in archival or object-based study.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities and projects at once.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Availability for domestic travel, including research trips to Puerto Rico.
