About the role#
The Surgical Tech Extern role provides hands-on experience in the operating room. This position prepares students to transition into a full Surgical Tech role after finishing their program. You will work on-site in a clinical environment, supporting surgical teams across all specialty areas.
What you'll do#
- Prepare the operating room for procedures by moving equipment and setting up sterile fields.
- Assist surgeons by passing instruments, holding retractors, and anticipating needs during surgery.
- Maintain aseptic technique, including gowning, gloving, and draping the surgical area.
- Help maintain accurate instrument and sponge counts.
- Transport patients, supplies, and equipment while following safety protocols.
- Monitor equipment for sterility and proper working condition.
- Report any breaks in sterile technique or urgent patient care issues to staff.
- Assist with patient positioning using proper lifting and movement techniques.
- Follow infection control programs and standard precautions.
What you'll need#
- A high school diploma.
- Current enrollment and good standing in the MVCC Surgical Technologist program, with completion of the first and second cohorts.
- A current BLS certification.
- Basic computer skills and strong interpersonal communication.

- Location: Utica, New York.
- Work modality: On-site.
- Schedule: Variable shifts, including potential weekends and holidays.
- This is a paid, non-union position.
