About the role#
As an Applied Scientist PhD Intern, you will work within teams like Microsoft AI Content, Commerce, and Monetization, Search Fundamentals, or Search Experiences. You will apply expertise in deep learning, reinforcement learning, and advanced data science to solve real-world product challenges. This role involves translating complex business needs into practical machine learning solutions that influence products like Copilot.
What you'll do#
- Analyze and improve machine learning algorithms and systems at scale.
- Translate product scenarios into applied ML problems and execute experiments to validate your solutions.
- Develop and scale models for search, ranking, recommendations, retrieval, and language understanding.
- Prepare and curate high-quality datasets by identifying quality issues and defining inclusion criteria.
- Build and enhance data and ML pipelines while using statistical methods to evaluate model performance.
- Collaborate with scientists, engineers, and product stakeholders to deliver integrated solutions.
- Communicate technical insights clearly and incorporate emerging research into your work.
What you'll need#
- Current enrollment in a full-time PhD program in Statistics, Econometrics, Computer Science, Artificial Intelligence, Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or a related field.
- You must have at least one quarter or semester of school remaining after your internship ends.
- A Bachelor's or Master's degree in a relevant field, with at least two years of related experience for those holding a Bachelor's degree.
- Experience with controlled experiments and interpreting offline or online evaluation metrics.
- Familiarity with large-scale distributed systems or productionizing applied science solutions.
- Relevant research publications, coursework, or project experience in areas such as language models, recommender systems, or location intelligence.
Location & details#
- This is a full-time, on-site internship based in Redmond, Washington, or Mountain View, California.
- Applications are accepted on a rolling basis.
- The internship is paid, with a base pay range of USD $6,810 to $13,480 per month, or $8,920 to $14,610 per month for specific locations including the San Francisco Bay area.
