About the role#
Tableau Research is an industrial research team focused on helping people see and understand data. This 12-week internship is designed to advance your research career while contributing to future product roadmaps. You will work closely with a mentor on the Tableau Research team to scope and execute a research project, with the goal of turning your work into a publishable paper. You will collaborate with researchers, engineers, designers, and product partners throughout the summer.
What you'll do#
- Scope a research question with your mentor that is ambitious and achievable within 12 weeks.
- Move quickly from idea to functional prototype.
- Design and build research prototypes.
- Run user studies or other evaluations to test your ideas.
- Share work in progress and present research updates at team meetings.
- Incorporate feedback throughout the project.
- Deliver a final presentation and written summary of your project.
What you'll need#
- Currently enrolled in a PhD program and in good academic standing.
- At least two years of research experience.
- Record of publishing at respected conferences or journals in data visualization, human-computer interaction, databases, or machine learning.
- Ability to build functional research prototypes quickly in a programming language or framework.
- Ability to scope problems well, prioritize important questions, and deliver results within a fixed timeline.
- Ability to communicate clearly in writing and in person.
- Ability to work well with people from different backgrounds.
- Preferred: Previous research internship experience.
- Preferred: Experience setting up user studies and analyzing qualitative and quantitative data.
- Preferred: Examples of user experience, interaction, or visualization design work.
- Preferred: Publications at venues such as VIS, EuroVis, CHI, UIST, SIGMOD, IUI, CSCW, AAAI, ACL, EMNLP, NAACL, or NeurIPS.
