About the role#
SHEC is a peer-run health promotion, education, and referral service for McMaster University students. Volunteers engage with students on health-related issues through peer support, events, and campaigns. This is a volunteer position with a minimum commitment of three one-hour shifts per week.
What you'll do#
- Perform three one-hour peer support shifts per week.
- Remain on-call during shifts to provide peer support or conduct anonymous pregnancy testing.
- Provide students with access to physical resources like menstrual and safe sex items, as well as informational pamphlets and books.
- Represent SHEC in a professional, respectful, and responsible manner.
- Maintain strict confidentiality for all individuals accessing services.
- Uphold a positive image of the MSU.
- Attend mandatory core training weekends twice per year and monthly training sessions on health topics.
- Arrive on time for all shifts and events.
What you'll need#
- Strong peer support skills, including empathy and a desire to assist others.
- Effective organization and time management skills.
- Strong verbal communication skills.
- Motivational skills.
- Relevant experience is an asset but is not required.
