About the role#
This is a temporary, part-time position for the Winter 2027 term. You will work as either a Legal Intern/Extern or a Rule Certified Limited Practice Student. You will gain hands-on experience by working alongside experienced attorneys and legal professionals. This position is located in Phoenix, Arizona.
What you'll do#
- Assist with trial preparation and various aspects of trial work, including jury selection.
- Attend and participate in witness interviews and various hearings, such as status conferences, settlement conferences, and evidentiary hearings.
- Research legal issues and write legal memoranda.
- Draft and edit pleadings.
- Meet with clients both in and out of jail.
- Review case files and assist assigned attorneys.
- Participate in training related to criminal defense and trial skills.
- Receive regular feedback on your verbal and written work.
If you serve as a Rule Certified Limited Practice Student, you will also represent indigent clients in criminal cases in Superior and Justice Courts. This includes handling preliminary hearings, plea proceedings, sentencings, and jury trials. You will receive training in opening statements, closing arguments, direct and cross-examination, and voir dire, while participating in a clinical course to improve public speaking.
What you'll need#
- Completion of at least one year of a Juris Doctor (JD) program at an accredited law school.
- Ability to work with traumatic subject matter.
- Must pass a pre-employment background and fingerprint investigation.
