About the role#
The Certified Legal Intern provides legal representation for indigent clients under the direct supervision of a Public Defender Attorney. This is a full-time, paid position based in Reading, Pennsylvania. You will work on-site and handle a variety of legal proceedings as part of the Public Defender Department.
What you'll do#
- Represent clients at summary, preliminary, mental health, and state parole violation hearings.
- Advocate for clients in juvenile court.
- Prepare appellate briefs and argue issues before the Appeals Court.
- Meet with clients to evaluate evidence and provide legal advice.
- Negotiate with the police and the District Attorney’s Office.
- Conduct hearings and manage case documentation.
- Perform administrative tasks such as filing, typing, and data entry.
What you'll need#
- A Juris Doctor degree from an accredited law school.
- Current certification from the PA Supreme Court to perform as a Certified Legal Intern.
- General knowledge of Pennsylvania criminal law.
- Proficiency with Windows-based computer programs.
- Strong problem-solving, organizational, and decision-making skills.
- Excellent oratory and interpersonal abilities.
- Ability to work independently and manage stress.
Location & details#
- This role is located in Reading, PA, and requires on-site work.
- You must have access to reliable transportation for travel to courts, prisons, and client meetings.
- Work is primarily during business hours, though occasional evening or weekend work may be required based on department needs.
