About the role#
This internship involves clinical work that requires advanced knowledge from your graduate studies. You will work under the supervision of a clinical supervisor and the director of outpatient treatment to counsel individuals and families dealing with substance use disorders. This role requires you to exercise discretion and judgment while applying your academic training to real-world patient care.
What you'll do#
- Observe and facilitate biopsychosocial assessments and service plan development.
- Provide individual, family, group, and crisis intervention counseling.
- Manage and monitor patient progress, including transition and discharge planning.
- Maintain accurate clinical records.
- Participate in treatment team meetings and clinical supervision sessions.
- Analyze professional journals and technical procedures to support your clinical work.
- Write reports and business correspondence related to patient care.
- Present information clearly to patients, staff, and other service providers.
What you'll need#
- A bachelor’s degree.
- Current enrollment in a master’s level counseling or social work program.
- You must be a student at the University of South Carolina College of Social Work, the University of South Carolina Counseling Program, or Columbia International University.
- Ability to define problems, collect data, and draw valid conclusions.
- Strong skills in reading technical procedures and writing professional reports.

- This position is located in Columbia, South Carolina.
- This is an on-site, full-time, paid internship.
- The term is rolling, with scheduling dictated by program requirements and your clinical supervisor.
