About the role#
This student role provides hands-on experience within the Production Engineering team at the Halifax Shipyard. You will gain insight into how complex ships are built and how design intent is turned into practical build plans. You will support engineering and production activities, including build strategy development, manufacturing planning, and continuous improvement work.
What you'll do#
- Support the development of Production Engineering deliverables for construction and design changes.
- Design jigs, fixtures, and tooling for unit builds, equipment installations, and temporary support.
- Create temporary services plans for scaffolding, access, ventilation, and temporary power or lighting.
- Assist in developing unit construction methods and sequences using 3D models and assembly hierarchies.
- Conduct time studies of work processes and assess bills of material to refine production norms.
- Prepare 3D models, extract fabrication drawings, and write work instructions for production trades.
- Support the NC data team with plate and profile nesting, material take-offs, and machine cutting accuracy testing.
What you'll need#
- Currently enrolled in a 4-year Engineering degree program (Computer, Electrical, Mechanical, or Industrial Engineering).
- 0-2 years of experience.
- General awareness of shipyard disciplines such as hull structure, piping, propulsion, HVAC, electrical, and manufacturing.
- Ability to read blueprints and navigate 3D ship models.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office suite.
- Strong communication, interpersonal, and problem-solving skills.
- Experience with AutoCAD (2D/3D) is preferred.
- Ability to organize and manage tasks with varying priorities.
- Must meet requirements for the Canadian Controlled Goods Program, Canadian Government Security clearance, and U.S. International Traffic in Arms Regulations.

- Compensation: This is a paid position. The company will pay co-op fees up to $1000.
