About the role#
As a Quantum Performance and Demonstrations Intern, you will work with IBM researchers to understand, improve, and demonstrate the capabilities of quantum computing systems. You will collaborate with a mentor to define research directions and turn them into concrete investigations. Your work will involve designing experiments that test the limits of current and emerging quantum processors.
What you'll do#
- Explore research questions regarding quantum system performance.
- Design and run experiments on quantum processors to characterize performance or improve computational accuracy.
- Develop quantitative methods for benchmarking, error analysis, and comparisons against theoretical predictions.
- Investigate techniques like error mitigation, error suppression, dynamic circuits, and error detection to extend the quality of computations.
- Collaborate with researchers across theory, software, and hardware teams to connect system-level advances to meaningful demonstrations.
- Document your findings and create workflows or best practices for your colleagues.
What you'll need#
- Enrollment in an academic graduate program (Ph.D. or research-focused Master's) in Physics, Computer Science, Mathematics, Engineering, or a related field.
- A focus on quantum computing or quantum information science.
- Coursework or research experience in quantum mechanics, linear algebra, or quantum information science.
- Demonstrated experience performing independent research through a thesis, projects, internships, or publications.
- Experience with scientific computing and at least one general-purpose programming language, such as Python.
- Ability to analyze experimental data and draw quantitative conclusions.
- Experience designing and executing experiments on quantum hardware, including characterization, benchmarking, or dynamic decoupling.
- Proficiency with scientific Python libraries like NumPy, SciPy, and Matplotlib, as well as quantum software frameworks such as Qiskit.
- Familiarity with noise modeling, numerical simulation of quantum circuits, and AI tooling for research.
- Publications or preprints in quantum computing, quantum characterization, or experimental demonstrations.
Location & details#
- Location: New York, United States.
- Term: Summer 2027.
- Modality: On-site.
- Employment: Full-time internship.
