About the role#
Humane World for Animals offers an Animal Caregiver internship at the Black Beauty Ranch in Murchison, Texas. This 12-week program runs from December 7, 2026, to February 26, 2027. You will work 40 hours per week, gaining hands-on experience in animal husbandry and ranch operations. The sanctuary houses over 700 animals across more than 40 species. Interns work alongside staff to support the daily needs of animals in the equine, farm, wildlife, or primate departments.
What you'll do#
- Prepare measured diets and provide water for animals.
- Track feedings on designated forms and boards.
- Clean enclosures, which may involve raking, weeding, sweeping, and climbing ladders.
- Observe and monitor animal health, maintaining detailed records.
- Provide daily behavioral enrichment and stimulation.
- Handle general housekeeping, including sanitizing dishes, laundry, and maintaining food storage areas.
- Maintain ranch equipment and vehicles through regular cleaning.
- Learn to identify individual animals and assist with basic medical documentation.
- Complete an educational presentation or a working project for a department.
What you'll need#
- You must be at least 18 years old.
- A valid driver’s license with an excellent driving record is required.
- You must provide proof of a negative tuberculosis (TB) test.
- Reliable transportation to the site is necessary.
- Access to a computer and a phone for communication.
- Ability to pass a background check.
- You must be able to follow safe animal handling protocols and staff instructions.
- Strong interpersonal skills and a commitment to accuracy.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Prior volunteer or internship experience with equine, farmed animals, or wildlife is helpful.
- You must be able to meet the requirements in the Essential Capabilities document.
