About the role#
Hawaiian Electric offers a summer internship program focused on project-based work. You will work with a dedicated mentor to research and execute an objective-based engineering project. This role provides an opportunity to gain experience with professional projects and hands-on challenges while learning about the utility industry.
What you'll do#
- Complete a request for engineering attention (REA).
- Investigate the REA and troubleshoot the identified problem or issue.
- Develop and evaluate options to address the issue.
- Create cost and schedule estimates for your proposed solution.
- Collaborate with stakeholders from Operations, Maintenance, Planning, Technical Services, Environmental, and Fuels.
- Develop an approved REA response.
- Participate in cross-functional activities and observe power generating facilities.
- Present your achievements and lessons learned to management at the end of the term.
What you'll need#
- Current enrollment as an active student at a post-secondary school.
- Pursuit of a degree in Mechanical Engineering.
- Minimum GPA of 3.0 and good academic standing.
- Status as a student who will be attending school in Fall 2027.
- Expected graduation date of December 2027 or later.
- Ability to provide an official digital transcript.

- Location: Honolulu, Hawaii.
- Term: Summer 2027.
- Schedule: Monday through Friday, 7:30 am to 4:00 pm.
- Status: Full-time, paid, non-exempt position.
- Modality: On-site.
