About the role#
This internship provides hands-on experience in medical office operations within a mental health setting. It is designed for individuals who want to start a career in healthcare or those without prior medical experience. You will work under supervision to learn daily clinic tasks, receive mentorship, and track your progress through a structured training checklist. This is a voluntary, unpaid position that requires a commitment of 600 total hours to receive a certificate of completion.
What you'll do#
- Manage front desk duties including faxing, copying, and filing.
- Handle patient check-in and check-out procedures.
- Schedule appointments and maintain professional phone etiquette.
- Learn the basics of Electronic Health Records using MEDENT.
- Oversee patient flow and the waiting area.
- Gain knowledge of general medical terminology and psychiatric services.
- Learn the fundamentals of insurance billing and coding.
- Apply HIPAA compliance and maintain patient privacy.
- Practice professionalism and discretion in a healthcare environment.
What you'll need#
- You must be at least 18 years old.
- You must have a high school diploma.
- No prior healthcare or office experience is required.
- You must be able to maintain a consistent schedule.
- You must pass a basic screening, including a background check and drug test.
- You should be motivated to build experience for a career in healthcare.
Location & details#
- The role is based in Port Charlotte, Florida.
- This is an on-site position.
- The schedule is flexible with a minimum of 20 hours per week, including 10-hour full office days.
- The program duration is 3 to 6 months.
