About the role#
This is a summer practicum position for students to gain field experience in public health. You will work alongside mentors to protect the public from environmental hazards in various settings, including food service establishments, daycares, long-term care homes, and summer camps. This role involves collaboration across multiple government departments to support regulatory inspection and compliance programs.
What you'll do#
- Assist Public Health Inspectors with organizing and conducting compliance inspections and audits.
- Support the development and maintenance of proper food handling practices and sanitary conditions.
- Conduct compliance inspections of public drinking water supplies, wastewater, and solid waste disposal.
- Participate in outreach and educational functions.
- Prepare reports and provide recommendations to ensure public protection through investigations and approvals.
- Gain exposure to communicable disease prevention, infection control, and outbreak management.
What you'll need#
- Current enrollment in a full-time Public Health program accredited by the Board of Certification of the Canadian Institute of Public Health Inspectors. Preference is given to students in their final year of study.
- Experience in a client service-based industry.
- Ability to demonstrate independent judgment, adaptability, and tact when interacting with the public.
- Professionalism when handling sensitive situations and high-pressure environments.
- A valid Nova Scotia driver’s license and access to a reliable vehicle for provincial travel.
Location & details#
- Positions are located in Bedford (Central Region) and Sydney (Eastern Region), Nova Scotia.
- This is a full-time, paid, on-site position.
- The duration is 16 weeks, beginning in Summer 2026.
