About the role#
This is a practicum position with the Government of Nova Scotia. You will work alongside mentors to gain experience in public health, including communicable disease prevention, infection control, and outbreak management. You will support regulatory inspection and compliance programs that protect the public.
What you'll do#
- Organize and conduct compliance inspections and audits in settings like food service establishments, daycares, long term care homes, and summer camps.
- Develop and maintain proper food handling practices and sanitary conditions.
- Assist with compliance inspections for public drinking water supplies, wastewater, and solid waste disposal.
- Perform outreach and educational functions.
- Write reports and make recommendations to ensure public protection through investigations and approvals.
What you'll need#
- Enrollment in a full time Public Health program accredited by the Board of Certification of the Canadian Institute of Public Health Inspectors. Preference is given to students in their final year of study.
- Experience in a client service-based industry.
- Ability to demonstrate independent judgment, adaptability, and tact when working with people.
- A valid Nova Scotia driver’s license and a reliable vehicle, as travel throughout the province is required.

- This is a 16-week, full-time, paid summer 2026 position based on-site.
- Openings are available in the Bedford and Sydney regions.
- Candidates may be subject to a criminal record or vulnerable sector check.
