About the role#
The Government of Nova Scotia is seeking a Student Public Health Inspector for a 16-week summer practicum. This role involves working alongside mentors to protect the public from environmental hazards in settings such as food service establishments, daycares, long-term care homes, and summer camps. You will gain experience across multiple public health disciplines, including communicable disease control and infection prevention.
What you'll do#
- Assist Public Health Inspectors with organizing and conducting compliance inspections and audits.
- Support the development and maintenance of proper food handling practices and sanitary conditions.
- Conduct compliance inspections of public drinking water supplies, wastewater, and solid waste disposal.
- Participate in outreach and educational functions.
- Prepare reports and provide recommendations to ensure public protection through investigation and approval processes.
What you'll need#
- Enrollment in a full-time Public Health program accredited by the Board of Certification of the Canadian Institute of Public Health Inspectors (preference given to students in their final year).
- Experience in a client service-based industry.
- Ability to demonstrate independent judgment, adaptability, and tact when interacting with the public.
- Professionalism when handling sensitive situations and high-pressure environments.
- A valid Nova Scotia driver’s license and access to a reliable vehicle for provincial travel.

- Location: Bedford (Central Region) or Sydney (Eastern Region), Nova Scotia.
- Term: Summer 2026 (16-week duration).
