    About the role#

    This practicum provides an opportunity to gain field experience in public health, working alongside mentors to protect the public from health hazards. You will collaborate with the Department of Health and Wellness, the Department of Agriculture, and other partners. This position involves 16 weeks of full-time work, starting in late September 2026.

    What you'll do#

    • Assist Public Health Inspectors with compliance inspections and audits in settings such as food service establishments, daycares, long-term care homes, and summer camps.
    • Help develop and maintain proper food handling practices and sanitary conditions.
    • Conduct compliance inspections for public drinking water supplies, wastewater, and solid waste disposal.
    • Participate in outreach and educational functions.
    • Report and make recommendations to ensure public protection through investigations and certificate applications.
    • Gain exposure to communicable disease prevention, infection control, and outbreak management.

    What you'll need#

    • Current enrollment in a full-time Public Health program accredited by the Board of Certification of the Canadian Institute of Public Health Inspectors. Preference is given to students who have recently completed their last year of study.
    • Ability to assess health risks and provide recommendations on complex public health issues.
    • Experience in a client service-based industry.
    • Professionalism when handling sensitive situations and high-pressure environments.
    • A valid driver's license and access to a reliable motor vehicle for required travel.

    Location & details#

    • This is an on-site, paid, full-time position located in Nova Scotia.
    • Two positions are available, with one located in the Central Region (Bedford) and one in the Eastern Region (Sydney).
    • A criminal record check or vulnerable sector check may be required.
