About the role#
The Government of Nova Scotia is offering a Public Health Student Practicum for the Fall 2026 term. This 16-week, full-time position provides hands-on experience working alongside mentors to protect the public from health hazards. You will collaborate with the Department of Health and Wellness, the Department of Agriculture, and other partners to gain exposure to communicable disease prevention, infection control, and outbreak management.
What you'll do#
- Assist Public Health Inspectors with compliance inspections and audits in settings such as food service establishments, daycares, long-term care homes, and safe body art facilities.
- Help develop and maintain proper food handling practices and sanitary conditions.
- Conduct compliance inspections for public drinking water supplies, wastewater, and solid waste disposal.
- Participate in outreach and educational functions.
- Report and make recommendations to ensure public protection through investigation and application reviews.
What you'll need#
- Current enrollment in a full-time Public Health program accredited by the Board of Certification of the Canadian Institute of Public Health Inspectors.
- Preference is given to students who have recently completed their final year of study.
- Ability to assess health risks and provide recommendations on complex public health issues.
- Experience in a client service-based industry.
- A valid driver's license and access to a reliable motor vehicle, as travel is required.
Location & details#
- This is an on-site, paid practicum located in Nova Scotia.
- Positions are available in the Bedford (Central Region) and Sydney (Eastern Region) areas.
- The term is 16 weeks, with an anticipated start date in late September 2026.
