About the role#
As an Applied GenAI Scientist Intern, you will explore how intelligent agents can reason, use specialized tools, and execute multi-step business workflows. You will focus on developing and evaluating a reusable approach for adapting advanced GenAI agents to business use cases within our Data, Digital, and Analytics organization. You will build on the Deep Claude Agent approach to investigate how task instructions, reusable skills, context, and tool access affect agent performance.
What you'll do#
- Define the use case and evaluation approach by translating business needs into focused agent tasks and success criteria.
- Design and prototype specialized GenAI agents by combining task instructions, skills, tools, and data.
- Assess and de-risk model components, comparing hosted and open-weight options while considering accuracy, latency, cost, and data-handling terms.
- Conduct systematic experiments to see how configuration, context, memory, and tool selection influence reasoning and output quality.
- Evaluate business value and reliability by comparing agent performance against baselines and analyzing failure modes.
- Develop a reusable capability and share findings with stakeholders through prototypes and clear guidance.
- Bring the latest techniques from academia into the organization to address practical business problems.
What you'll need#
- Current enrollment in or completion of a Master's degree, or current enrollment in a PhD program.
- Major in Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, Computer Science, Data Science, Statistics, or a related quantitative discipline.
- Foundational understanding of machine learning and generative AI, including large language models.
- Experience using Python to conduct experiments, analyze data, or prototype AI applications.
- Ability to design experiments, critically evaluate results, and communicate findings clearly.
- Interest in applying GenAI to commercial, medical, or government affairs applications.
- Experience with LLM applications, AI agents, prompt design, or tool-augmented reasoning.
- Familiarity with methods for evaluating LLM accuracy, reliability, and reproducibility.
- Exposure to Claude Code, agent skills, or Model Context Protocol (MCP).
- Experience fine-tuning, serving, or benchmarking open-weight models.
- Awareness of model licensing and data-handling terms.
- Excellent communication, collaboration, and interpersonal skills.
- Commitment to Integrity, Courage, and Passion.
Location & details#
- Location: South San Francisco, California.
- Term: Winter 2027.
- Modality: On-site, full-time.
