About the role#
The Des Moines Register is offering a paid, 10-week newsroom internship for the fall of 2026. This role is designed for students or recent graduates interested in news reporting, photography, or videography. Interns will work 20 hours per week and gain hands-on experience under the guidance of veteran editors. Work produced during this term will be published in the Des Moines Register and on its website.
What you'll do#
- Research and gather information from various sources.
- Produce written and multimedia content.
- Collaborate in brainstorming sessions.
- Cover news and enterprise stories.
- Work with the politics team, including coverage during the lead-up to and on Election Day.
What you'll need#
- Enrollment in or recent graduation from an Iowa college or university program (junior year or beyond preferred).
- Familiarity with newswriting style.
- Strong critical thinking and attention to detail.
- A valid driver’s license, reliable transportation, and the minimum liability insurance required by state law.
- Availability for some evening and weekend work.

- Compensation: $18.00 per hour.
