About the role#
The Enterprise Risk Management intern will support our team through daily responsibilities, projects, and initiatives that contribute to departmental goals. As part of the bank's second line of defense, you will gain firsthand exposure to how a large financial institution makes risk-informed decisions. You will see how we demonstrate effective risk management to our executive leadership, the Board, and regulators.
What you'll do#
- Work directly alongside risk professionals.
- Learn about risk appetite, governance committees, and how risk information reaches leadership.
- Turn raw risk data into information by identifying trends and building dashboards.
- Evaluate how risks and controls are classified, documented, and reported.
- Participate in a coordinated community service project.
- Network with executive and senior leadership.
- Present a summary of your experience at the conclusion of the program.
What you'll need#
- Full-time enrollment as a Bachelor or higher degree-seeking student at an accredited college or university.
- A GPA of 3.0 or higher.
- Demonstrated interest in the financial services industry or risk management.
- Initiative, enthusiasm, a strong work ethic, team mentality, and self-motivation.
- Authorization to work in the United States.
- Ability to travel periodically throughout the First Merchants footprint if needed.

- Term: Summer 2027.
- Availability: 40 hours per week from May 17th to August 6th, 2027.
- Locations: Indianapolis, Indiana or Royal Oak, Michigan.
- Modality: On-site.
- This is a paid, full-time internship.
