About the role#
This is a hands-on co-op position based in Billerica, Massachusetts, for the Spring 2027 season. The assignment lasts for 6 months. You will work alongside lab managers, scientists, and analysts to automate manual lab processes, streamline data handling, and prototype AI-assisted tools. This role is a fit for a student interested in the intersection of science, data, and automation.
What you'll do#
- Support the automation of manual lab workflows, including data processing, QC review, and report generation.
- Develop and test Python scripts or tools for data analysis, cleanup, and automation.
- Prototype and evaluate AI-assisted tools, such as large language models or AI agents, for practical lab applications.
- Connect instrument data to lab systems to reduce manual Excel and CSV handling.
- Document workflows, assumptions, and usage instructions for the tools you build.
- Collaborate with lab staff to gather requirements and refine tools based on feedback.
What you'll need#
- Currently pursuing a Bachelor's or Master's degree in Chemical Engineering, Chemistry, or a related field.
- Coding ability in Python or a similar language for data analysis or automation.
- Familiarity with structured data like Excel, CSV, and databases.
- Exposure to AI tools, large language models, or AI agent frameworks.
- Experience with APIs, data pipelines, or workflow automation.
- Interest in or coursework related to laboratory operations, analytical chemistry, or QA.
- Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and a willingness to learn lab workflows.
- Ability to communicate effectively with non-technical users.
- Must be a currently enrolled student familiar with university co-op requirements.
Location & details#
- Location: Billerica, Massachusetts (On-site).
- Term: Winter/Spring 2027 (January through June).
- Schedule: Full-time, 40 hours per week, Monday through Friday.
- Compensation: $20-$30 per hour, depending on skills.
