About the role#
We are looking for a Software Engineering Intern to join our Pricing and Rules Platform team in Raleigh. You will spend 12 weeks working alongside industry experts to modernize our systems and build self-service tools for business users. This is a hands-on position where you will gain experience in enterprise Java, rules engines, cloud identity, and modern web practices. The internship begins May 17, 2027.
What you'll do#
- Support the Rules Engine Modernization by upgrading Drools and migrating from Java 8 to a current LTS version.
- Set up and run rules in champion/challenger mode.
- Assist with cache removal and runtime data loading.
- Benchmark options for performance, reliability, and data freshness.
- Help build a UI to expose the Drools workbench to users with role-based access.
- Implement validation and guardrails to keep business-authored rules consistent.
- Document trade-offs regarding performance, maintainability, and cost.
- Support dependency upgrades and fix deprecated libraries or outdated build configurations.
- Assist in migrating authentication and authorization to Okta.
- Build automation and tooling to streamline pricing rule validation, testing, and deployment.
What you'll need#
- Current pursuit of a degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related field.
- Proficiency in Java, including core language and OOP fundamentals.
- Understanding of REST APIs and microservice concepts.
- Familiarity with Git and version control.
- Strong problem-solving skills and a desire to learn.
- Preferred experience includes Drools, Spring Boot, Maven or Gradle, and front-end development with JavaScript, TypeScript, or React.
- Helpful background in identity concepts like OAuth2 and OIDC, caching strategies, CI/CD, Docker, cloud platforms, and scripting with Python or Bash.
