About the role#
The Software Design Co-op works within the Controls Engineering department to support machine concepts, control software design, and the integration of electrical and mechanical systems. This role involves programming and integration tasks using PLCs, PCs, robotics, motion controllers, vision systems, and lasers. You will support projects from the initial design phase through to machine installation at customer sites.
What you'll do#
- Design and develop PLC or PC-based software programs based on project requirements and standard methods.
- Assist in debugging and commissioning control systems at internal facilities and during customer site installations.
- Select, test, and integrate hardware and software components including robots, sensors, motion controllers, and analog devices.
- Collaborate with the Controls Engineering team to improve control technology integration with a focus on safety, functionality, and cost.
- Verify software completeness through thorough machine functionality testing.
- Provide accurate project documentation, technical problem-solving advice, and operator training to customers.
- Monitor project milestones and coordinate with other departments to ensure schedules are met.
What you'll need#
- Current enrollment in a post-secondary engineering degree or diploma program, specifically in Electrical, Mechanical, or Computer Engineering.
- Enrollment in an academic program that requires a co-op or work term.
- Advanced computer skills in Excel.
- Strong organizational skills with the ability to set priorities and work with minimal supervision.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills.
- Ability to work effectively within a team environment.
