TITLE: Graduate Student Assistant: Assistant Journal Editor DEPARTMENT: School of Information Studies REPORTS TO: Professor, School of Information Studies OPEN TO: Dominican Graduate Students HOURLY RATE: $17.00 Dominican University’s School of Information Studies seeks a Graduate Student Assistant (GSA) to serve as the Assistant Journal Editor for its peer-reviewed journal: Global GLAM: An Information Studies - Social Justice Journal. For clarity, GLAM is the acronym for Galleries, Libraries, Archives, and Museums as representation of the living cultural heritage organizations that ground the Information Studies discourse. The role of Assistant Journal Editor is a great opportunity for a graduate student (masters or doctoral) who seeks to develop in the area of scholarly communication, digital content creation, information studies based project management, publication workflows, and/or general research (an abbreviated list of possibilities) within a community building - social justice model. Project Management: * Assisting the journal’s editorial leads with development and execution a communications plan to promote the journal and its various activities * This includes identifying relevant social media platforms and developing content to post on selected platforms * Working with the journal’s platform-publishing partner * Assist with the communication flow between journal’s editorial leads and advisory boards and potential advisory board members. Journal Administrative Assistance: * Check the journal’s email account daily and alert editorial team to issues that need to be addressed * Taking notes/minutes at editorial team meetings * Track deadlines and follow up on outstanding tasks * Sending reminders to peer reviewers and/or authors to meet deadlines * Tracking manuscript progress through the editorial workflow/process * Compiling statistics on submissions, acceptance rates, review times, and publication timelines Copyediting and Editorial Production Assistance * Performing basic copyediting for grammar, style, consistency, and adherence to journal standards. * Checking references and citations for completeness and formatting accuracy. * Reviewing proofs for typographical errors and formatting issues. * Assisting with figure, table, and supplementary material checks. * Coordinating with production staff during issue preparation. Additional Journal Details Scope Galleries, Libraries, Archives, and Museums (GLAM) around the world, both historical and contemporary, serve as repositories and homes for stories of all kinds. But GLAMs are often viewed as institutions, collections, or buildings, rather than also being the living organizations they are. Through an innovative, creative, and community-driven approach to scholarship, the GLOBAL GLAM strives to tell the stories of the people, communities, spaces, programs, services, and tools that contribute to all kinds of GLAMs - those who collect, curate, make accessible, and preserve the stories of others. Through this work, we hope to highlight the untold stories that explore the diversity of lived experiences of working with or in GLAMs across the globe and find creative ways to approach our work as knowledge and information professionals. GLOBAL GLAM is a peer-reviewed journal that will also include professional and community focused content. Vision GLOBAL GLAM seeks to push the boundaries of what counts as scholarship within library and information science (LIS). We strive to incorporate elements of the traditional publication process that result in high-quality scholarship with a creative, innovative, and experimental approach to exploring the work of libraries and archives globally with a distinct focus on telling stories. We seek to build community around the stories that are being told while simultaneously being driven by the community. Led by antiracist and decolonial social justice values, we seek to create a platform to experience and participate in Information Studies scholarship, not just consume it. A place where community members can tell their stories and discuss and debate critical issues affecting libraries and archives. This is an hourly assistantship with a compensation rate of $17.00 per hour.
