About the role#
Democracy Forward Foundation is seeking candidates for a one-year public interest legal fellowship starting in September 2027. This is a full-time position for recent law school graduates or rising third-year law students. Fellows will work as full members of litigation case teams. We will consider extending an offer for a second year based on performance and organizational needs after the first six months of work.
What you'll do#
- Partner with staff lawyers in proceedings before federal and state courts and agencies.
- Advise clients on legal strategy, risks, and objectives.
- Perform legal research and draft documents including substantive briefs, motions, comments, and regulatory filings.
- Assist in preparing for arguments, hearings, and court appearances.
- Monitor cases and provide recommendations for potential litigation involvement or regulatory advocacy.
- Travel occasionally for team retreats, conferences, and partner convenings.
What you'll need#
- A J.D. from an accredited law school by September 2027.
- Active membership in the bar of a state or the District of Columbia.
- Excellence in legal research and drafting documents in a professional and timely manner.
- A demonstrated commitment to democracy and social progress.
- Strong attention to detail and the ability to manage multiple projects under tight deadlines.
- Collaborative skills and the ability to work with colleagues across diverse backgrounds.
- Experience or an interest in working within a nonprofit or advocacy organization.
Location & details#
- The position is based in Washington, DC.
- This role operates on a hybrid schedule, requiring in-office presence eight times per month.
- The annual salary is $80,000, contingent on the receipt of external funding.
