About the role#
Democracy Forward is hiring a legal intern for the summer of 2027. This is a full-time, paid position based in Washington, DC. You will support our mission to use the law to advance democracy through litigation and regulatory engagement. This role is hybrid, with an expectation to be in the office 2-3 days per week.
What you'll do#
- Assist attorneys in representing clients in federal and state courts and before agencies.
- Help develop legal strategy and identify risks and opportunities.
- Conduct legal research and draft documents, including briefs, motions, and regulatory comments.
- Help prepare for hearings, arguments, and court appearances.
- Monitor cases for potential litigation or advocacy.
- Participate in meetings with clients, such as unions, nonprofits, and local government entities.
- Contribute to organizational discussions regarding our ongoing work.
What you'll need#
- You are a first or second year law student at an accredited law school.
- You have an interest in public interest litigation across various subject areas.
- You demonstrate a commitment to democracy and social progress.
- You possess excellent attention to detail and the ability to manage multiple projects under tight deadlines.
- You have strong interpersonal skills, including self-awareness and a commitment to diversity and inclusivity.
- You are comfortable working with colleagues and stakeholders from diverse backgrounds.
- You have experience or an interest in working for a mission-driven or advocacy organization.

- Location: Washington, DC.
- Term: May 27, 2027, to July 30, 2027.
- Compensation: $28.85 per hour.
- Work Modality: Hybrid.
