About the role#
The Special Projects Unit at the Committee for Public Counsel Services is seeking law students for a full-time internship during the winter of 2027. This unit handles criminal post-conviction cases where legal developments may provide grounds for vacating a conviction. You will work alongside attorneys, a paralegal, and an administrative assistant to support litigation and case investigation. Interns participate in training sessions focused on the Massachusetts criminal court system and appellate practice.
What you'll do#
- Investigate cases and review documents both online and at the court.
- Use electronic discovery tools to review materials.
- Conduct legal research and draft legal memoranda.
- Help develop legal theories for current litigation.
- Respond to client inquiries.
- Observe motions, arguments, and trials in court.
What you'll need#
- Completion of your first year of law school by the start of the internship.
- Coursework in evidence, criminal law, criminal procedure, constitutional law, critical legal theory, or trial advocacy.
- Experience working with low-income clients, people of color, immigrants, LGBT people, or other underrepresented groups.
- Proficiency in a foreign language is a plus.
