About the role#
The CITGO Lemont Refinery is seeking a Process Safety Engineer intern for a 12-week summer program. This role provides exposure to refinery organization, work processes, and safe work practices. You will work alongside Business Unit engineers to maintain systems that reduce risk and remove hazards. You will also communicate process safety and risk management information to the HSSE Department. At the end of the term, you will deliver a summary presentation of your work and accomplishments.
What you'll do#
- Assist with hazard analysis methods including HazOp, LOPA, and what-if checklists.
- Support the Process Hazard Analysis (PHA) program and its lifecycle.
- Develop strategies to reduce risk for high-consequence scenarios.
- Participate in HSE meetings and incident investigations.
- Collaborate with Operations, Maintenance, and Engineering to resolve process safety issues.
- Develop and deliver training on process safety management.
- Help interpret and apply internal and external standards.
- Review cause maps and ensure the implementation of incident prevention strategies.
- Provide technical support to facility process safety teams.
- Identify and establish leading indicator metrics.
- Administer the refinery Management of Change (MOC) program.
- Lead team meetings and deliver presentations to various groups.
What you'll need#
- Current enrollment in a bachelor's or master's degree program in Chemical, Mechanical, Civil, or Industrial Engineering, or Fire Protection Engineering/Technology.
- Must be from an ABET-accredited program.
- Minimum sophomore status with an overall GPA of 3.0 or higher.
- Ability to work 40 hours per week.
- Current valid driver's license.
- Strong analytical and communication skills.
- Ability to work effectively in a team environment.
- TWIC eligibility.
