About the role#
As a Medical Assistant Extern, you will work as an apprentice while finishing your formal training. You will operate under the close supervision of an experienced Medical Assistant, following established policies and guidelines. This is a full-time, paid position based in Chesapeake, Virginia.
What you'll do#
- Room patients and prepare them for examinations.
- Take vitals including blood pressure, height, and weight, and document these in the EMR.
- Update EMR records with medications, allergies, and medical or surgical history.
- Prepare exam rooms and trays for minor procedures, assisting the physician or PA as needed.
- Clean and restock exam rooms between appointments.
- Perform clinical tests such as blood draws, EKGs, and swab tests.
- Manage physician orders and follow up to ensure results are received.
- Obtain prior authorizations.
- Train as a Patient Service Representative by registering patients, verifying insurance, answering phones, and scheduling appointments.
- Attend hospital-wide orientations, meetings, and in-services.
- Complete all competencies assigned by your educational facility.
What you'll need#
- A High School Diploma or GED.
- Active enrollment in a Certified Medical Assistant program.
- One year of medical training is preferred.
- Strong interpersonal, written, and oral communication skills.
- A commitment to flexible scheduling to support patient care.
