About the role#
The San Francisco Chronicle is seeking a Data Reporting Intern for the Summer 2027 term. You will join the Data team to develop graphics-focused stories, interactive projects, and data-driven deep dives. This is a paid, full-time position that offers training and mentoring while providing opportunities to work on stories from both the office and the field. You will collaborate with reporting teams across the newsroom to help readers understand their communities.
What you'll do#
- Report and write data-driven articles for digital and print editions.
- Generate story ideas and work with editors and developers to improve storytelling.
- Collaborate with newsroom reporters to produce original journalism.
- Create assets to promote and distribute team projects.
What you'll need#
- Strong news judgment, creativity, and attention to detail.
- Ability to report, write, and build stories quickly while maintaining accuracy.
- Experience working with large datasets, preferably using Python, R, or similar coding languages.
- Knowledge of multimedia storytelling and an interest in experimenting with new ways to engage readers.
- Ability to collaborate with various newsroom teams.
- Dedication to organization and documentation.
- Preferred: Web development, data visualization, mapping, or GIS skills.
- Majors in Journalism, Communications, Data Science, or Computer Science are encouraged to apply.

- Location: San Francisco, California.
- Modality: Hybrid.
- Term: Summer 2027 (12 weeks, June to August).
- Compensation: $20.50 per hour.
- Note: Weekend, evening, and holiday work may be required.
