About the role#
Caring Hands Animal Hospital offers a flexible externship program for veterinary students. This program provides practical experience in a small animal practice to help you prepare for your career after graduation. You will work alongside our veterinary team to practice problem-solving, technical, and communication skills under supervision. Externships typically last two to three weeks, though they can range from two to eight weeks to fit your college curriculum. You will be assigned a mentor who will provide instruction and a final written evaluation of your performance.
What you'll do#
- Experience the typical caseload of a small animal practice.
- Gather patient histories and perform physical examinations.
- Develop diagnostic and therapeutic plans.
- Scrub in to surgery and assist in medical case management.
- Provide wellness care and build client communication skills.
- Produce medical records including SOAPs.
What you'll need#
- Enrollment in an accredited DVM program.
- Authorization to work in the United States.
- Current professional liability insurance.
- Familiarity with the Veterinary Practice Act regarding your scope of duties.
- Professional dress and behavior at all times.
