About the role#
Caring Hands Animal Hospital offers a DVM externship program for students seeking practical experience in a small animal practice. This program supports your clinical education by providing hands-on training under the supervision of a mentor doctor. You will work alongside our veterinary team to gain experience with typical caseloads and refine your skills in a professional setting. The program is flexible, with externships typically lasting two to three weeks, though they can range from two to eight weeks depending on your college requirements.
What you'll do#
Under the guidance of a mentor, you will participate in all aspects of patient care. Your daily responsibilities include:
- Gathering patient histories.
- Performing physical examinations.
- Developing diagnostic and therapeutic plans.
- Scrubbing in to assist with surgeries.
- Helping manage medical cases.
- Providing wellness care.
- Developing client communication skills.
- Producing medical records, including SOAPs.
What you'll need#
- Current enrollment in an accredited DVM program.
- Authorization to work in the United States.
- Professional liability insurance, specifically current AVMA PLIT coverage.
- A professional demeanor and commitment to the ethical standards of our practice.
Location & details#
This position is located in Falls Church, Virginia. It is an on-site, full-time role with a rolling schedule that includes day, evening, and weekend shifts. A stipend of $250 per week is provided.
