About the role#
The VWCC Earn to Learn Nurse Extern program is designed for students in the VWCC RN program. You will support nursing staff in delivering safe and compassionate patient care while gaining hands-on clinical experience. This role requires you to observe, document, and communicate patient needs to the healthcare team while working under supervision.
What you'll do#
- Assist with basic patient care, including activities of daily living like bathing, feeding, and mobility.
- Obtain and record vital signs, weights, intake and output, pulse oximetry, and pain assessments.
- Perform clinical tasks such as blood glucose monitoring, EKGs, oral suctioning, and incentive spirometry.
- Collect and process specimens and report any abnormalities to the licensed nurse.
- Provide emotional support and education to patients and their families.
- Assist with patient transport, admissions, discharges, and diagnostic procedure preparation.
- Respond to patient call lights and support safety initiatives like fall prevention and early mobility.
- Maintain a clean care environment and ensure equipment functions properly.
- Participate in interdisciplinary rounds, team communication, and emergency situations under RN direction.
- Engage in orientation, training, and competency development activities.
What you'll need#
- A high school diploma or equivalent education.
- An active AHA BLS certification.
