About the role#
This is a full-time, paid internship for the Summer 2027 term. You will work on-site in Kinston, North Carolina, supporting a full-time mechanical engineer. You will gain experience in areas such as mechanical design, hydraulics, drivetrains, motors, simulation analysis, and testing procedures.
What you'll do#
- Assist in the design and development of forklifts and material handling equipment.
- Create design layouts and select appropriate materials.
- Organize bill of materials data and write design documentation.
- Propose hydraulic systems and specify components to meet performance goals.
- Introduce alternate drivetrain concepts and analyze gear drives, including gears, bearings, and housings.
- Research new motor designs, materials, and manufacturing processes.
- Provide cost estimates for engineering projects.
- Perform structural or stability analysis, including load and stress calculations.
- Use finite element analysis and fatigue life prediction tools to evaluate designs.
- Analyze failed components to determine the cause of failure.
- Identify testing methods and devise validation procedures for new systems.
- Evaluate new components and emerging technologies.
What you'll need#
- Currently pursuing a Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related field.
- Strong analytical, written, and verbal communication skills.
- Effective interpersonal skills to work within a team.
- Reliable transportation to the work site.
- Legal authorization to work in the United States without sponsorship.
