About the role#
As a Data Graphics Fellow, you will join the Creative team to support newsroom visuals. This six-month program is designed for early-career journalists to gain experience in digital storytelling. You will produce real work for a large audience while working 40 hours per week. This role reports to the Data Visualization Director.
What you'll do#
- Produce clear maps, charts, infographics, and tables using tools like Datawrapper and Illustrator.
- Build custom interactive graphics and story formats using Svelte and d3.
- Develop projects ranging from quick news stories to ambitious interactive packages, including scroll-driven experiences and custom minisites.
- Collaborate with journalists and designers to support newsroom coverage.
- Pitch and develop your own story ideas.
- Manage multiple projects simultaneously.
What you'll need#
- Expert knowledge of Adobe Illustrator.
- Experience with JavaScript, d3, HTML, CSS, and GitHub.
- Familiarity with tools such as Datawrapper, Flourish, and Figma.
- Strong attention to detail, including typography, layout, and color skills.
- Knowledge of data visualization best practices, mobile-first design, and accessibility standards.
- Ability to work under deadlines and communicate effectively with editors and teammates.
- Interest in expanding skills outside of your current expertise.
Location & details#
- This position is based in New York, New York, with remote options available.
- New York-based fellows are expected to work from the office at least three days per week.
- The term is for Summer 2026.
- This is a paid, full-time position offering $23 per hour.
