About the role#
The Aerosciences Group is hiring a Computational Fluid Dynamics Intern for the Summer 2027 Graduate Researcher Program. This 10-12 week internship provides hands-on experience within our research and development team. You will work on aerodynamic analysis tools that support flight platforms ranging from low-speed aircraft to hypersonic vehicles. Please note that work performed during this internship cannot contribute to your PhD thesis.
What you'll do#
- Develop aerodynamic analysis and optimization tools to increase fidelity while reducing cycle time and cost.
- Collaborate with CFD developer partners to build CFD prediction capabilities for laminar-turbulent transition.
- Analyze aerodynamic flow-fields and extract engineering data.
- Participate in program events including mentorship, speaker talks, and an innovation challenge.
What you'll need#
- Completed the first year of PhD studies by July 2027.
- Currently pursuing a PhD in Aeronautical or Mechanical Engineering with an emphasis on Fluid Dynamics.
- Ability to work full-time for 10-12 weeks during Summer 2027.
- Experience with CFD applications and code development.
- Background in scientific programming using C, FORTRAN, or C++.
- Strong knowledge of fluid dynamics, specifically compressible flows and turbulence modeling.
- Familiarity with Linux/Unix environments.
- Understanding of numerical methods for unstructured or structured grid CFD.
- Knowledge of laminar-turbulent flow transition mechanics and related computational methods.
- Strong communication skills and the ability to work effectively in a team.
- Must meet U.S. export control compliance requirements as a U.S. Person.
