About the role#
Baxter & Woodman is hiring a GIS Intern to join our Spatial Technology Group. This position offers hands-on experience supporting municipal GIS projects. You will work alongside experienced professionals on both office-based tasks and field data collection. This is a paid, full-time, rolling internship.
What you'll do#
- Report to the GIS Department Manager for assignments and scheduling.
- Perform mapping, data development, editing, and analysis using Esri ArcGIS software.
- Help maintain maps, GIS databases, and geospatial information.
- Configure ArcGIS Online web maps, dashboards, and mobile solutions.
- Support municipal projects involving utilities, public works, and planning.
- Collect and verify GPS/GNSS data for utility assets, signage, pavement, and ADA infrastructure.
- Incorporate field data, as-built plans, and record drawings into GIS.
- Assist staff with troubleshooting, data analysis, and developing new solutions.
What you'll need#
- Ongoing pursuit of a four-year degree in Geography, GIS, Geospatial Science, Urban Planning, Environmental Science, or a related field.
- Basic understanding of GIS concepts and familiarity with Esri ArcGIS, including ArcGIS Pro.
- Ability to perform both office work and outdoor field data collection.
- Strong technical problem-solving skills and a willingness to learn new workflows.
- Excellent communication and organizational skills.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office, specifically Excel and Word.
- Valid driver's license and the ability to travel throughout the Chicagoland or southeast Wisconsin area.
- Ability to lift up to 50 lbs. for field equipment.
- AutoCAD experience is a plus.
