About the role#
Baxter & Woodman is hiring a GIS Intern for our Spatial Technology Group. This role provides hands-on experience by supporting municipal projects through both office-based tasks and field data collection. You will work alongside experienced GIS professionals and report directly to the GIS Department Manager.
What you'll do#
- Perform mapping, data development, editing, analysis, and quality control using Esri ArcGIS software.
- Maintain maps, GIS databases, and geospatial information.
- Configure and support ArcGIS Online web maps, dashboards, and mobile solutions.
- Collect and verify GPS/GNSS data for utility assets, pavement, signage, and ADA infrastructure.
- Incorporate field data, record drawings, and as-built plans into GIS systems.
- Assist staff with special projects, troubleshooting, and the development of new GIS solutions.
What you'll need#
- Ongoing pursuit of a four-year degree in Geography, GIS, Geospatial Science, Urban Planning, Environmental Science, or a related field.
- Basic understanding of GIS concepts and familiarity with Esri ArcGIS, including ArcGIS Pro.
- Ability to perform both office work and outdoor field data collection.
- Strong technical problem-solving skills and a willingness to learn new workflows.
- Excellent communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office programs like Excel and Word.
- Ability to lift up to 50 lbs. for field equipment.
- Valid driver's license and the ability to travel to client locations in Chicagoland or southeast Wisconsin.
- AutoCAD experience is a plus.

- Modality: On-site and hybrid options available.
- Schedule: Full-time with a rolling term.
- Compensation: $23.00 per hour.
