About the role#
As a Neutral Particle Beam Intern, you will work directly on the operation, maintenance, and improvement of the Antares NPB system. You will gain hands-on experience with the hardware and controls that support beam operations, ranging from wiring and mechanical assembly to diagnostics, measurements, and materials effects testing. This role requires working across physics, chemistry, mechanical systems, and controls to troubleshoot problems and improve system performance.
What you'll do#
- Support day-to-day operation and upkeep of the NPB system.
- Assemble, modify, and maintain NPB hardware, including wiring and mechanical components.
- Troubleshoot hardware and diagnostic systems.
- Design and build fixtures to support NPB operations and testing.
- Identify and implement improvements to beam quality.
- Operate the beam for materials effects testing.
- Take measurements, analyze results, and document findings in technical reports.
- Assist with controls and GUI interfaces for NPB systems.
- Develop quality-of-life improvements that make NPB operation, testing, and maintenance more efficient.
What you'll need#
- Enrollment in at least a bachelor’s degree program, entering your Junior or Senior year.
- Prior internship experience or significant experience (over one year) in project teams, laboratories, or research.
- Academic or hands-on experience across physics, chemistry, and engineering.
- Broad technical experience working with experimental systems, hardware, or laboratory equipment.
- A GPA of 3.5 or above.
- Experience in a university club or organization.
- Strong interpersonal and technical communication skills.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with attention to detail.
- Ability to work cross-departmentally and effectively in a dynamic environment.
- Ability to work independently and in a team, take initiative, and communicate effectively.
