Title: Mechanical Engineering Co-Op Location: Bedford, MA Updated At: 2026-09-14T08:53:34-04:00 Content: As a Mechanical Engineering Co-Op at Lexington Medical, you will design, test, and document parts for the AEON surgical stapler. This is a six-month, full-time co-op on our engineering team in Bedford, Massachusetts, and the projects are real ones: components going into a product used in operating rooms, and processes running on our own production floor. The work moves from CAD and drawings through fixture builds, testing, and the documentation that has to stand up to regulatory scrutiny, so you finish the term with a clear picture of how a medical device actually gets made. About Lexington Medical Lexington Medical is a medical device company designing and manufacturing surgical stapling technology at our headquarters in Bedford, Massachusetts, just outside Boston. Our AEON™ Endostapler is an FDA-cleared, minimally invasive surgical stapler used in operating rooms around the world. With engineering, manufacturing, and quality working closely together, engineers stay close to the product and see their work move from an idea through prototyping, testing, manufacturing, and ultimately into the operating room. About the Role As a Mechanical Engineering Co-Op, you will sit with our R&D engineering team and take on new product development work to the next generation of surgical staplers. Expect to spend your time across CAD and drawings, the lab, and the machine shop as you help develop new products. Because our teams are small, co-ops are given real scope. Responsibilities Design and revise components and component drawings in accordance with industry and Lexington Medical drawing standards. Design test fixtures to characterize the performance of new components. Fabricate them using a combination of outsourcing and in-house rapid prototyping. Plan and run engineering tests on new products, then write the test protocols and engineering reports that document what you found. Operate lab equipment with minimal supervision, including mills, lathes, test stands, and 3D printers. Perform dimensional and functional quality checks using calipers, micrometers, optical comparators, and other inspection instruments. Complete the documentation required by our quality system so that your work holds up under FDA and internal audit requirements. Qualifications Currently enrolled at an accredited university as an undergraduate or graduate student in Mechanical Engineering or a closely related technical discipline. Prior internship, co-op, or substantial hands-on project experience in engineering or manufacturing. Working knowledge of 3D CAD, and the ability to read and create engineering drawings, including the basics of GD&T. Comfortable working with machines such as mills, lathes, band saws, and belt sanders. Ability to operate FDM and SLA 3D printers is a plus. Experience with machining, injection molding, or metal stamping is a plus. Coursework or project experience in design of experiments, statistics, or test method development is a plus. What Success Looks Like In your first month, you are designing fixtures and running tests with light oversight, and you are asking the questions that catch problems early rather than waiting to be told. By the midpoint of the co-op, you own a defined project end to end, including the designs, test data and documentation behind it. By June, you leave behind constructed fixtures, protocols, and data reports the team keeps using after you go back to school, and you can explain how a design decision traces through testing and documentation to the finished design. Location & Work Arrangement This position is based at our headquarters in Bedford, Massachusetts, in the Greater Boston area, and is an on-site role. The co-op runs full-time, five days per week, from January 2027 through June 2027. Salary Range $28.00 to $34.00 USD per hour Visit our Candidate Journey page to learn what to expect from our hiring process. Hourly Rate$28—$34 USD Absolute URL:
