About the role#
As a Mechanical Engineering Design Intern, you will join the Reactor Hardware Engineering team to support the development of Mark-1 and JANUS-1 components. You will work under the guidance of a Responsible Engineer, taking ownership of specific components while integrating into the broader engineering organization. You will start with focused assignments before transitioning to a long-duration project that concludes with a technical presentation to the team.
What you'll do#
- Support the design, analysis, development, and testing of mechanical components.
- Create and refine engineering designs, drawings, test plans, and technical documentation.
- Participate in design reviews and communicate technical decisions, risks, and results.
- Work with cross-functional teams, including manufacturing and test, to resolve technical challenges.
- Identify opportunities to improve performance, reliability, manufacturability, and testability.
- Seek feedback and incorporate lessons learned to increase your independence throughout the term.
What you'll need#
- Current enrollment in a bachelor’s degree program for mechanical or aerospace engineering, entering your junior or senior year.
- Previous internship experience or at least one year of significant experience via a project team, laboratory, or research program.
- Strong analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills.
- Ability to work independently and collaborate effectively across technical disciplines.
- Experience with a university engineering club, competition team, or technical organization.
- A GPA of 3.5 or higher is preferred.
- Experience with mechanical CAD, engineering drawings, analysis, prototyping, or hardware testing is a plus.
Location & details#
- Location: Torrance, California.
- Term: Summer 2027.
- Modality: This is a full-time, on-site role. Interns are expected to be in the office five days per week.
- Eligibility: This position is paid. You must be a U.S. citizen, lawful permanent resident, refugee, or asylee to comply with U.S. government export regulations.
