About the role#
As a Reporting Fellow at MPR News, you will work within our daily news hub. This team functions as the central nervous system of the newsroom, delivering timely information to our audience. You will cover breaking news, track trending topics, and develop in-depth enterprise stories. This fellowship provides an opportunity to sharpen your news judgment, refine your story framing, and deepen your understanding of journalism ethics.
What you'll do#
- Cover general assignment, trending stories, and breaking news as assigned.
- Track and pitch stories relevant to Minnesotans.
- Develop daily and enterprise stories on a sub-beat or area of interest.
- Produce content for radio, web, and social channels.
- Report from the field, including recording press conferences, taking photos, and interviewing community members and officials.
What you'll need#
- A completed bachelor's degree or at least two years of relevant professional experience in journalism or communications.
- Strong journalistic writing skills and a solid grasp of reporting ethics.
- Availability to work full-time, 40 hours per week, Monday through Friday from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.
- Flexibility to work nights and weekends as assigned.
- Ability to research and interpret records and source materials.
- Willingness to conduct in-person interviews.
- Preferred: Experience in a daily news environment and with audio journalism production.
- Preferred: Familiarity with audio recording equipment, production software, and the ability to capture quality photos and video.
- Preferred: A self-motivated, resourceful, and detail-oriented approach.
Location & details#
- Location: Saint Paul, Minnesota.
- Term: January 4, 2027, to December 3, 2027.
- Pay: $20 to $23 per hour, based on individual education and experience.
- Work Modality: On-site.
- Benefits: Eligible for sick time, health insurance as required by the ACA, and participation in the APMG retirement plan.
