About the role#
Reporting to the Preconstruction Manager, the Student Estimator role offers hands-on experience supporting the pursuit and delivery of large-scale infrastructure projects. You will work alongside experienced estimators, project managers, and operations teams to develop practical estimating skills and contribute to competitive bid submissions. This position provides exposure to the full project lifecycle, from pre-construction through project execution.
What you'll do#
- Support the development of competitive bids and project pursuit strategies.
- Perform quantity take-offs from drawings, specifications, and contract documents.
- Update estimating software with quantities, pricing information, and subcontractor quotations.
- Solicit subcontractor and supplier pricing.
- Analyze and compare subcontractor and vendor quotations.
- Participate in the development of estimate summaries and cost build-ups.
- Assist estimating teams with the development of construction means, methods, and execution strategies.
- Collaborate with engineering and design teams throughout the proposal development process.
- Prepare and validate portions of detailed project estimates.
- Participate in tender closings and proposal submission activities.
- Collaborate with joint venture partners and external stakeholders.
- Maintain historical cost databases, bid documentation, and estimating records.
- Participate in bid review meetings and contribute to risk and opportunity discussions.
What you'll need#
- Current enrollment in a diploma or degree program in Civil Engineering, Construction Management, Civil Engineering Technology, Quantity Surveying, or a related discipline.
- Strong interest in construction estimating, infrastructure projects, and pre-construction services.
- Excellent attention to detail.
- Strong analytical, mathematical, and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines.
- Strong organizational and time-management skills.
- Ability to build and maintain positive working relationships.
- Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a collaborative team environment.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications (Excel, Word, Outlook).
- Experience with Bluebeam, AutoCAD, InEight, Hard Dollar, or other estimating software is preferred.
- Understanding of construction drawings, specifications, and contract documents is preferred.
- A valid driver's license with a clean driver's abstract is preferred.

- Compensation: Paid position ($23.00 - $25.00 per hour, with eligibility for overtime).
