About the role#
This paid, full-time summer internship offers an 11-week immersion into the internal audit department at Werner Enterprises. You will work from our corporate headquarters in Omaha, Nebraska, gaining experience through job training, mentorship, and project-based work. The program includes professional development activities such as networking, community events, and leadership sessions.
What you'll do#
- Assist with audit planning and perform process walkthroughs.
- Gather, organize, and analyze financial, operational, and IT data.
- Conduct testing of internal controls and document your results.
- Prepare workpapers to support audit findings and conclusions.
- Help assess compliance with company policies and regulatory requirements.
- Support risk assessments by identifying potential areas of exposure.
- Track remediation progress on prior audit issues.
- Draft sections of audit reports and summarize findings for senior auditors.
- Maintain audit files with appropriate evidence and version control.
- Collaborate with senior auditors and process owners across the organization.
- Attend meetings with department leaders to understand business operations.
- Use audit tools to perform data testing and create visualizations for findings.
- Support IT audits, including user access and system control reviews.
What you'll need#
- Current enrollment in a degree program for Accounting, Finance, Business, Information Systems, Data Analytics, Cybersecurity, or a related field.
- Strong analytical and critical-thinking skills with a high level of attention to detail.
- Intermediate skills in Excel or Sheets, or a willingness to learn quickly.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to manage multiple assignments, organize your work, and meet deadlines.
- Professionalism when handling confidential information and interacting with management.
- A basic understanding of accounting, finance, or information systems.
- A willingness to learn new systems and work across different functional areas.
