About the role#
The Acquisitions Fellow is a 12-month, full-time position at the UW Press. You will work under the Editorial Director to support the acquisition, development, and evaluation of scholarly book manuscripts. This role offers an immersive look at the publishing process, from initial proposal review to the final stages of production.
What you'll do#
- Collaborate with acquisitions editors and authors throughout the entire book project lifecycle.
- Evaluate manuscript proposals and final drafts, including checking permissions for illustrations and quotations.
- Draft descriptive copy and advance book information.
- Manage the peer review process, including researching potential readers and gathering feedback.
- Prepare materials for departmental and editorial meetings.
- Maintain databases for active and archived projects while keeping electronic and paper records organized.
- Process honoraria and complimentary copies for readers.
- Coordinate with marketing, design, and production departments to support specific book projects.
- Handle sensitive communications and confidential materials with discretion.
What you'll need#
- Bachelor's degree or equivalent.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Proven ability to manage multiple long-term projects simultaneously.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office.
- Ability to work both independently and as part of a collaborative team.
- Commitment to incorporating an understanding of diverse human experiences into publishing work.
- Sensitivity to language concerning race, gender, sexuality, and ability.
Preferred qualifications include graduate work in the humanities or social sciences, a commitment to a career in academic publishing, and experience with equity and inclusion work. Familiarity with Adobe In-Design, Photoshop, or Filemaker Pro is also a plus.
