About the role#
The Department of Biomedical Sciences at the University of Tennessee Health Sciences College of Dentistry is seeking a full-time, research-focused faculty member. This role is available at the Assistant Professor, Associate Professor, or Professor rank, depending on credentials, and may be tenure or non-tenure track. The position combines an independent or collaborative research program with a core responsibility for coordinating and mentoring student scholarly activity across the dental education continuum.
What you'll do#
- Mentor predoctoral and graduate students in developing research questions, study designs, and project timelines.
- Provide hands-on guidance in research methods, including experimental design, data management, and literature review.
- Support students in the responsible conduct of research, covering ethics and compliance expectations.
- Coordinate student research experiences by collaborating with departmental and college leadership.
- Develop and deliver workshops or structured programming on research fundamentals, such as hypothesis generation, statistics, and scientific writing.
- Coach students through the dissemination of their work, including abstracts, posters, and manuscripts.
- Teach within the biomedical sciences or dental curriculum using active-learning approaches.
- Maintain an active research program and pursue extramural funding.
- Participate in departmental and university service, including committees related to research training and curriculum.
What you'll need#
- A Doctoral Degree (DDS/DMD, PhD, or equivalent terminal degree) in Dentistry, Biomedical Sciences, or a related discipline.
- Strong organizational and project management skills with the ability to manage multiple trainee projects simultaneously.
- Experience developing student research programming, structured mentorship models, or research training curricula.
- Familiarity with research compliance processes (e.g., IRB/IACUC) and best practices in research rigor and reproducibility.
- Teaching experience using active-learning approaches and outcomes-based assessment.
