About the role#
The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) is hiring a student assistant to work in the Office of Audiovisual/Graphics. You will work under the supervision of a supervisor to support the design, production, and coordination of graphic and multimedia materials. This is a learning-focused role where you will build your understanding of design principles, project coordination, and professional workplace practices within a public sector environment.
What you'll do#
- Assist with the design and production of graphics for print and digital media, including flyers, brochures, and social media content.
- Support branding and layout development for District 4 events, outreach campaigns, and internal communications.
- Edit and prepare images, graphics, and files for print, web, and presentation use.
- Collaborate with staff to incorporate feedback and complete projects within established deadlines.
- Use industry-standard software and emerging design technologies, including AI-assisted tools, to support workflow and concept development.
- Maintain consistency with branding, typography, accessibility, and visual communication standards.
- Organize project files and maintain digital asset libraries to support production workflows.
- Research current design trends, communication strategies, and multimedia approaches.
What you'll need#
- Current enrollment as a college student in Graphic Design, Visual Communication Design, Digital Media, Multimedia Studies, or Fine Arts.
- Minimum cumulative 2.0 GPA and completion of minimum unit requirements each term.
- Basic knowledge of graphic design, layout, and branding principles.
- Familiarity with Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, or InDesign.
- Good written and verbal communication skills, plus strong attention to detail.
- Ability to manage multiple tasks, meet deadlines, and work well with others.
- Willingness to learn new design tools and technologies.
- Preferred: Experience creating visual content for print, web, or social media and experience organizing digital files.
Location & details#
- Location: Oakland, California.
- Work Modality: On-site.
- Schedule: Flexible hours between 8 AM and 5 PM, Monday through Friday. Generally up to 24 hours per week during the academic year and up to 40 hours during breaks.
- Compensation: $18.27 to $24.62 per hour.
- Status: Part-time, temporary, non-benefited position.
