About the role#
The Mechanical Department Co-Op Program provides an extended learning opportunity for engineering students. You will work up to 40 hours per week on strategic projects that support locomotive and railcar operations. The program includes a field assignment at a facility from May through July, followed by a transition to the Omaha headquarters from August through December. You may be required to travel across the network during the fall to support your project work.
What you'll do#
- Learn core business processes and systems within department operations.
- Assist with process improvement projects at locomotive or railcar facilities.
- Develop standard work documentation and value stream maps to support operational efficiency.
- Apply Lean or Six Sigma concepts to real-world business challenges.
- Collaborate with shop employees and department leaders to implement solutions.
- Build and strengthen a network of professional contacts across the company.
What you'll need#
- Currently pursuing a degree in Aerospace Engineering, Electronics Engineering, Engineering Management, Industrial Management, Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, Systems Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Industrial Engineering, or Supply Chain Management.
- Completion of at least one year of undergraduate coursework, though two years or more is preferred.
- A GPA of 2.7 or higher.
- A valid driver's license.
- Strong analytical, problem-solving, and critical thinking skills.
- Basic organization, prioritization, and time management skills.
- Proficient verbal and written communication skills.
- Willingness to ask questions and learn.
- Experience working outdoors in variable weather conditions is a plus.
- Must be authorized to work in the United States without company sponsorship.

- This role is based in Omaha, Nebraska.
- The position offers a hybrid work environment.
- Housing, transportation, and relocation stipends are available for qualified candidates.
- The role is paid, with an estimated wage between $23 and $28 per hour, depending on your year of study, qualifications, and experience.
