About the role#
The TUCAN Source Student Research Assistant will contribute to the development and testing of TRIUMF's new ultra-cold neutron (UCN) facility. This role involves hands-on work with cryogenic systems, magnets, and measurement cells to support research into fundamental neutron properties. This is a full-time, on-site position for the Winter 2027 term, with a preference for candidates available for 8 months or longer.
What you'll do#
- Design and implement slow control systems for experimental hardware.
- Install and test a cryogenic temperature-measurement device to characterize isotopically pure helium-4.
- Install and test a superleak system for superfluid helium-4 separation.
- Install and test a superconducting magnet-based neutron polarizer.
- Develop and test the nEDM measurement neutron cell, including high voltage testing and laser window development.
- Perform data collection and conduct basic analyses to verify system performance.
What you'll need#
- Completion of at least the second year of a physics or engineering physics program.
- Ability to successfully complete the TRIUMF in-house radiation safety training course.
- Ability to be designated as a TRIUMF Nuclear Energy Worker.
- Availability for 8 months or more is preferred.
