About the role#
The Metadata Student Assistant supports the Metadata Initiatives Librarian and Metadata Specialist at The Ohio State University Libraries. You will work on projects involving non-MARC metadata for the Digital Collections repository, which houses a variety of digitized and archival resources. This role offers training and is suitable for students seeking internship or independent study credit.
What you'll do#
- Create, transform, and edit metadata using tools like Microsoft Excel and Open Refine.
- Ingest metadata and digital files into the repository and verify successful uploads.
- Perform quality reviews to ensure metadata accuracy.
- Assist with digital accessibility by transcribing text, proofreading transcriptions, providing alternative text for images, and editing captions for audiovisual resources.
What you'll need#
- Enrollment in a Master's degree program with a focus on Library and Information Science, Art History, History, English, or the Humanities.
- Ability to perform detailed, sometimes repetitive work with a strong focus on catching typos.
- Comfort working independently and learning new technologies.
- Experience with Microsoft Excel, along with good communication and interpersonal skills.
- Preference is given to those who have completed cataloging or metadata coursework or have experience with controlled vocabularies and data manipulation tools.
Location & details#
- This is a remote position based in Ohio.
- The schedule requires 10 to 12 hours per week during weekdays.
- This is a paid, temporary, part-time role.
