    About the role#

    The Hubbard Conservation Fellowship is a 12-month, full-time position designed for recent college graduates. It bridges the gap between academic study and a professional career by providing a comprehensive range of experiences within a conservation organization. Fellows participate in various aspects of conservation work, with latitude to shape the experience based on individual interests and career objectives. This position is located at the Platte River Prairies in Wood River, Nebraska, and runs from February 1, 2027, through January 28, 2028. Housing is provided on-site.

    What you'll do#

    • Perform land management tasks including prescribed fire, invasive species control, fence repair, and seed harvest.
    • Conduct data collection and manage projects within a set budget.
    • Lead or monitor work groups consisting of staff, interns, and volunteers.
    • Engage in outreach, communication, and fundraising activities.
    • Network with landowners, conservation partners, government officials, donors, board members, and the general public.
    • Travel to multiple Conservancy sites and attend conservation-related meetings and conferences.
    • Plan and conduct an independent project aligned with your career goals.
    • Oversee the activities of short-term staff and volunteers.
    • Negotiate and contract with vendors.
    • Shadow Conservancy and partner staff.

    What you'll need#

    • A BA, BS, AS, or technical degree in biology, natural resources management, environmental studies, or a related field, with a graduation date of December 2026 or earlier.
    • 1 to 2 years of related experience in custodial and ecological land management or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
    • Demonstrable leadership experience and the ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team.
    • Experience working outdoors and the ability to recognize plant and animal species.
    • Qualified as or able to meet the requirements for a Prescribed Fire Crew Member.
    • Some experience managing volunteers or entry-level staff.
    • A valid driver's license and a good driving record.
    • Knowledge of current conservation trends and practices.
    • Working knowledge of common software applications.
    • Strong communication skills in English, with multi-lingual or cross-cultural experience considered an asset.

    • This position requires irregular hours, travel, and extensive outdoor physical labor under adverse conditions.
