About the role#
The National Audubon Society offers an internship at the Audubon Center for Birds of Prey in Maitland, Florida. This position provides hands-on experience in wildlife rehabilitation and clinical care for raptors. You will work under the supervision of the Senior Coordinator of Raptor Conservation and the Raptor Conservation Manager to learn about raptor husbandry, conservation, and clinic operations.
What you'll do#
- Participate in clinical operations including taxonomy, anatomy, feather structure, imping, tail sheathing, necropsy, pesticide poisoning, medication calculations, and fluid therapy.
- Perform daily examinations, provide treatments, and administer medications to sick or injured birds.
- Prepare food for clinic patients and maintain clean housing for the raptors.
- Prepare laboratory slides for analysis and diagnostic testing.
- Observe surgical procedures and assist with radiology and bird evaluations.
- Maintain a culture of safety while working in the clinic.
- Share your experiences through contributions to e-newsletters and social media.
What you'll need#
- A high school diploma is required. Current students or recent graduates within the last three years are preferred.
- A background in biology, animal science, or pre-veterinary coursework is preferred.
- Strong communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills.
- A willingness to learn and work effectively in a team environment.
- Prior experience with wildlife handling or animal medicine is highly desirable.
- A commitment to Audubon’s mission, programs, and organizational values of care, collaboration, change, integrity, impact, and innovation.
- Respect for wildlife, conservation, and the Florida environment.
Location & details#
- This is an on-site, part-time position located in Maitland, Florida.
- The term runs from January 1, 2027, through April 30, 2027.
- The schedule requires three full days per week, totaling 24 hours per week and over 400 hours for the duration of the internship.
- This is a paid internship.
